The Daniel Fast

Fasting for the New Year

The Daniel Fast is a spiritual experience that many Christian believers participate in at the start of the calendar year during the month of January. However, the Daniel Fast can be done anytime of the year for any reason.
It is important that we, the believer understand that the Daniel Fast is not a requirement of spirituality, but a tool that allows the believer to develop a stronger relationship with the Lord. There are great benefits to fasting. Taking part in a fast helps the believer develop a more intimate relationship with God, seek answers to prayers, and grow stronger in the knowledge of God.

The Daniel Fast is a biblical based partial fast. There are two essential scriptures for the Daniel Fast. In the Daniel Chapter 1, the Prophet ate only vegetables (that would have included fruits) and drank only water. From these scriptures we find two of the guidelines for the Daniel fast:

1. Only fruits and vegetables
2. Only water to drink


Also in Daniel Chapter 10, the Prophet ate no meat nor any precious breads or foods and he drank no wine for 21 days. So from this scripture, we find the third guideline for the Daniel fast:

3. No sweeteners and no breads


There is no prescribed time limit for the Daniel Fast. It is simply your choice of how long you part-take in any fast. Many have linked the Daniel fast to a 10-Day or 21-Day period of time because of the scriptures in Daniel chapter 1 & 10. However, some have even chosen to link their fast to the 40-Day fast of Jesus Christ in the book of Matthew. But again, there is no required time limit to the Daniel Fast. Remember, the most important part of fasting is about your relationship and sacrifice unto the Lord.

If you have health issues or concerns, you should always talk with your health professional before starting the Daniel Fast or any other major change in your diet. Fasting should never bring harm to the body, therefore medications should be continued as normal during the Daniel Fast.

The Daniel Fast affects the Body, Soul, and Spirit. As our diet changes our Bodies are naturally affected. However, the Daniel Fast should not be done to lose weight, but should be done for spiritual growth and relationship with the Lord. The Soul is also greatly impacted during the Daniel Fast. The soul is the seat of our emotions, intellect, personality and will-power. Jesus was tempted during His 40 day, 40 night fast; therefore, as believers it is important to stay focused on our prayers and tasks during the Daniel Fast, so that we gain strength and renewed clarity in our spiritual journey. Our Spirit is the born-again part of us that surrenders to God. During a fast the Holy Spirit will work within us so that we grow spiritually in the Lord.

Fasting is always linked with a spiritual goal. Therefore, during the time of fasting, we should focus on prayer, study, and meditation of scriptures.

Foods to Eat during the Daniel Fast

Vegetables:
Artichokes, Asparagus
Beets, Broccoli, Brussels,
Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower,
Celery, Chili Peppers,Corn, Cucumbers,
Eggplant, Garlic, Gingerroot, Kale, Leeks,
Lettuce, Mushrooms, Mustard Greens,
Okra, Onions, Parsley, Potatoes, Radishes
Rutabagas, Scallions, Spinach, Sprouts,
Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes,
Turnips, Watercress, Yams, Zucchini

Whole Grains:                                                          
Brown Rice, Oats, Barley

Legumes:
Dried Beans, Pinto Beans,
Split Peas, Lentils, Black Eyed Peas

Fruits:

Foods to Avoid during the Daniel Fast:
Meat, Foods containing Preservatives or Additives,
High Fat Products, White Rice, Sugars or Sugar substitutes,
White flour and all products using it,
Caffeine, Carbonated Beverages
